A few weeks ago, we shared the results from our survey on student behavior and discipline. Something closely associated with student behavior is cell phone use during class. Once again, we thank everyone for taking the time to respond to the survey. Here is a breakdown of the feedback:
These results show that while there are differences in opinion, it is clear an overwhelming majority of respondents desire some restriction of cell phones. By creating and enforcing reasonable policy and educating students on responsible cell phone usage, schools can create a more focused and productive learning environment with fewer interruptions for our hard working teachers. Ultimately, the goal of education should be to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world while also cultivating important skills such as self-regulation and interpersonal communication.
Francis Howell Families has always been about academic excellence. Studies (see below) support the benefits of less cell phone usage in the classrooms – and maybe throughout the buildings. Let’s get a conversation going this school year with teachers, administrators, and parents about the level and method of cell phone usage – as many districts are now doing. Let’s include everyone’s voice and find a consensus that works best for everyone.
